Did Wang computer get it right or what?
In 1972 I was working for a civil engineering company in San Jose California, who called all of us surveyor grunts into the office to show off their computor hookup, a dialup to a Wang computer. We all took turns playing Pong which had just came out, then one of the engineers ran through a few courses (distance and bearing) of a land survey and did an inverse to come up with the closing distance and bearing with just a little button pushing. We knew how to do this long hand with a HP35 hand held calculator, which also had came out in 1972, but to see it done by a computer in so short a time was like a miracle to us.
The Wang had been around for a while, but was a long way from being a personal computor. It was basicly a telephone with a rudimentary key board and was a huge unit that served a number of clients. So we all know what evolved after that and how Bill Gates figured out that we could all have our own personal computer "PC". Well, we've got them now and each one of us has a lot more storage and computing power than Wang could even imagine, along with Google, which replaced Microsoft's Altavista search engine. Google, as far as I know, is a free service that gives you access to untold amounts of information along with storing vast amounts of your own information. My blog has over 1000 posts stored on google, and the articles, most of the links, and pictures are still stored there. My nephew has a blog, bmxmuseum.com, that sometimes gets 100,000 hits in one day and Google pays him a few cents for every hit, so not only do they give free storage, but they pay you for web traffic.
So Google in a way resembles the old Wang computer and has grown to be the largest data storage on the planet, look out for Microsoft because they are doing the same thing with servers that they did with the PC, as can be observed, in this video, by their new data center in Quincy Washington.

Paulson's New Program: Giving People Money They Can't Afford To Spend
24/7 Wall st.
Douglas A. McIntyre November 25, 2008
TreasuryThe news is as old as the Magna Carta. The consumer is broke. He does not have a dime. He is out of work. He is defaulting on his home equity loan, and the bank has reposed his credit card. It may be best to let his spending rest while his catches his economic breath.
Henry Paulson has other ideas. He wants to help people to borrow money that they cannot repay, now or in the near future.
According to The Wall Street Journal, "Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, seeking to ease strains in the consumer credit market, plans to announce Tuesday the formation of a program to increase the availability of auto loans, student loans and credit cards."
The head of the Treasury is concerned that people who want credit can't get it. But, they can't afford it either.
The latest program points to the Achilles Heel of the entire $700 billion Paulson program. It provides capital to people, businesses, and programs which cannot be revived by the money nor can they sustain any of the economic improvement which the cash initially brings them. The backing of Citigroup (C) and AIG (AIG)--in the case of the insurance company, not Paulson's money--has only served to point out that they stand on clay feet. The cause of their problems, which is derivatives and loans tied to failing parts of the economy, cannot be solved by sums which are modest compared to the real trouble. In the case of AIG, the government is already caught in an endless rat warren.
Walking up to the average citizen and offering him more credit is like giving a pyromaniac a match. He so loves the warmth of the flames and the attendant mayhem that he cannot help himself. Passing the consumer more money will only bring more ruin to the credit system.

Middle East Priorities For Jan. 21
By Brent Scowcroft and Zbigniew Brzezinski
Washington Post Friday, November 21, 2008
The election of Barack Obama to be the 44th president is profoundly historic. We have at long last been able to come together in a way that has eluded us in the long history of our great country. We should celebrate this triumph of the true spirit of America.
Election Day celebrations were replicated in time zones around the world, something we have not seen in a long time. While euphoria is ephemeral, we must endeavor to use its energy to bring us all together as Americans to cope with the urgent problems that beset us.
When Obama takes office in two months, he will find a number of difficult foreign policy issues competing for his attention, each with strong advocates among his advisers. We believe that the Arab-Israeli peace process is one issue that requires priority attention.
In perhaps no other region was the election of Obama more favorably received than the Middle East. Immediate attention to the Israeli-Palestinian dispute would help cement the goodwill that Obama's election engendered. Not everyone in the Middle East views the Palestinian issue as the greatest regional challenge, but the deep sense of injustice it stimulates is genuine and pervasive.
Unfortunately, the current administration's intense efforts over the past year will not resolve the issue by Jan. 20. But to let attention lapse would reinforce the feelings of injustice and neglect in the region. That could spur another eruption of violence between the warring parties or in places such as Lebanon or Gaza, reversing what progress has been made and sending the parties back to square one. Lurking in the background is the possibility that the quest for a two-state solution may be abandoned by the Palestinians, the Israelis, or both -- with unfortunate consequences for all.
Resolution of the Palestinian issue would have a positive impact on the region. It would liberate Arab governments to support U.S. leadership in dealing with regional problems, as they did before the Iraq invasion. It would dissipate much of the appeal of Hezbollah and Hamas, dependent as it is on the Palestinians' plight. It would change the region's psychological climate, putting Iran back on the defensive and putting a stop to its swagger.
The major elements of an agreement are well known. A key element in any new initiative would be for the U.S. president to declare publicly what, in the view of this country, the basic parameters of a fair and enduring peace ought to be. These should contain four principal elements: 1967 borders, with minor, reciprocal and agreed-upon modifications; compensation in lieu of the right of return for Palestinian refugees; Jerusalem as real home to two capitals; and a nonmilitarized Palestinian state.
Something more might be needed to deal with Israeli security concerns about turning over territory to a Palestinian government incapable of securing Israel against terrorist activity. That could be dealt with by deploying an international peacekeeping force, such as one from NATO, which could not only replace Israeli security but train Palestinian troops to become effective.
To date, the weakness of the negotiating parties has limited their ability to come to an agreement by themselves. The elections in Israel scheduled for February are certainly a complicating factor, as is the deep split among Palestinians between Fatah and Hamas. But if the peace process begins to gain momentum, it is difficult to imagine that Hamas will want to be left out, and that same momentum would provide the Israeli people a unique chance to register their views on the future of their country.
This weakness can be overcome by the president speaking out clearly and forcefully about the fundamental principles of the peace process; he also must press the case with steady determination. That initiative should then be followed -- not preceded -- by the appointment of a high-level dignitary to pursue the process on the president's behalf, a process based on the enunciated presidential guidelines. Such a presidential initiative should instantly galvanize support, both domestic and international, and provide great encouragement to the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.
To say that achieving a successful resolution of this critical issue is a simple task would be to scoff at history. But in many ways the current situation is such that the opportunity for success has never been greater, or the costs of failure more severe.
Brent Scowcroft was national security adviser to Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush. He is president of the Forum for International Policy and the Scowcroft Group. Will Hillary be Obama's Thanksgiving Surprise?
Obama is asking potential appointees to fill out a 63-page questionnaire aimed at unearthing any foible, no matter how personal or seemingly trivial, that could derail a nomination or reflect poorly on the incoming president.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) is on track to be nominated for the job of secretary of state after Thanksgiving, transition aides said.
Hmm...Sounds like Hillary's past is coming back to haunt her. When Hillary was running for Senator her and Bill were accepting a lot of money from a guy that was a known felon. Peter Paul was a business partner with Stan Lee of Marvel Comics and donated to her campaign. Now Peter Paul was no angel, but he appears to be more on the up & up than the Clintons, as can be seen in the following video.

Silverton gives its vote to transgendered mayor
by Kimberly A.C. Wilson, The Oregonian
Friday November 07, 2008, 7:04 PM
SILVERTON -- Close your eyes and listen as the new mayor strides down his hometown's sidewalks, greeting a pair of cowboys whose boots clap against the leaf-covered macadam.
"Good job, Stu," intones the taller one.
"Congratulations, Mr. Mayor," calls the other.
Stu Rasmussen hollers back just as gruffly, wrapping up an exchange that would seem at place in any small farming community.
Article @ Oregon Live

If anyone chooses to be different, and is accepted in their own community or even accepted as a leader, then more power to them, as long as they represent the majority and do the will of the people. I know that Rudolph Giuliani will probably come to mind here, but he didn't represent the grass roots in NY city. In fact he represents graft and corruption and should be prosecuted for almost every crime in the book including murder.
Stu walks around freely in the community, and frequents thrift shops and flea markets presenting a contoversial face wherever he goes, while preserving the integrity and history of this historical town.

Fed won't account for $2 Trillion of Bailout

Fed Defies Transparency Aim in Refusal to Disclose
By Mark Pittman, Bob Ivry and Alison Fitzgerald
Nov. 10 (Bloomberg)
Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve is refusing to identify the recipients of almost $2 trillion of emergencyloans from American taxpayers or the troubled assets the central bank is accepting as collateral.
Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said in September they would comply withcongressional demands for transparency in a $700 billion bailout of the banking system. Two months later, as the Fed lends far more than that in separate rescue programs that didn't require approval by Congress, Americans have no idea where their money is going or what securities the banks are pledging in return.

A change in plans
By Chris Carey on November 12, 2008 3:54 PM
Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. confirmed Wednesday what was already becoming apparent -- that the government will not use any of its $700 billion financial-industry bailout fund to buy toxic assets from banks and other institutions.
Those purchases were the basis of the Troubled Asset Relief Program that Congress approved last month. The argument was that removing distressed assets such as mortgage-backed securities from the books of those companies would ease fears about their solvency, free up capital, encourage lending between companies and thaw a frozen credit market.

News roundup: More money for AIG; secret U.S. commando raids
Posted by Mike Carney at 07:51 AM/ET, November 10, 2008 in Today's papers and sites
Good morning. It's Monday.
AP says the federal government is giving insurance giant AIG another $40 billion.
Three nearly simultaneous blasts killed dozens of people in Baghdad, according to BBC News.
The U.S. military has carried out "nearly a dozen previously undisclosed attacks against al-Qaeda and other militants in Syria, Pakistan and elsewhere," The New York Times reports.
The Washington Post says China joined the list of governments that are enacting economic stimulus programs with the announcement last night that it will spend $586 billion to "ease credit restrictions, expand social welfare services and launch an infrastructure spending program that would include the construction of new railways, roads and airports."
President-elect Barack Obama is planning to release some Gitmo detainees, while shipping "dozens, if not hundreds" to the United States for criminal trials, according to AP.
"A third group of detainees — the ones whose cases are most entangled in highly classified information — might have to go before a new court designed especially to handle sensitive national security cases," the wire service says, citing anonymous sources.
The Post says few people noticed the five-sentence announcement in September that gave banks a giant windfall by changing the nation's tax policy. "The change to Section 382 of the tax code -- a provision that limited a kind of tax shelter arising in corporate mergers -- came after a two-decade effort by conservative economists and Republican administration officials to eliminate or overhaul the law, which is so little-known that even influential tax experts sometimes draw a blank at its mention," the paper says.
The Los Angeles Times describes a new study that suggests statins, a popular cholesterol drug, can help people who don't have cardiovascular disease.
Financial Times reports that investment banks and brokerages are expected to cut another 70,000 jobs.

New video surfaces on WTC7
Apparently taken from the top of a building at Warren and North End Avenue and probably from the roof of the high school there. This video, shows unseen footage of a vertical row of windows being blown out and, like some of the others, shows a large pyroclastic flow and hot gasses rising from the collapsing building.
No sound on these videos...
This video also shows some North Tower footage that gives a different view point of the collapse of WTC1. As in existing videos it shows the mysterious disintegration of matter into dust before it reaches the ground, which can't really be explained by ordinary methods of building demolition, nor has it been explained by the NIST investigation. I wonder if the US Department of Energy has any ideas about the evidence of extreme temperatures that was found throughout the whole area.

More video from the same area. These are taken from the hotel overlooking the high school at the curve on the North side of Chamber street. These videos are high quality and show plenty of detail of the whole sequence.

Bu$h gives his uh heartfelt congratulations to Obama
George Duhhbya Bu$h at his best:
"There's important work to do in the months ahead, and I will continue to conduct the people's business as long as this office remains in my trust. During this time of transition, I will keep the President-elect fully informed on important decisions. And when the time comes on January the 20th , Laura and I will return home to Texas with treasured memories of our time here -- and with profound gratitude for the honor of serving this amazing country."

Bush congratulates Obama on 'awesome night'

Page 1 of 2 Single Page View
US President George W Bush telephoned Barack Obama on his "awesome night" - a historic election win fuelled by the two-term incumbent's vast unpopularity.
Cloistered at the White House with family and senior aides while tens of millions of US voters flooded the polls coast to coast, Bush reached out to Obama and Republican rival John McCain when the outcome was no longer in doubt.
"Mr President-elect, congratulations to you. What an awesome night for you, your family and your supporters. Laura and I called to congratulate you and your good bride," Bush's spokeswoman, Dana Perino, quoted him as telling Obama.
"I promise to make this a smooth transition. You are about to go on one of the great journeys of life. Congratulations and go enjoy yourself," Bush told Obama, she told reporters by email.
After months of near invisibility during the campaign, Bush planned to make a public statement on the hard-fought 2008 White House race in the mansion's Rose Garden at 10.40am (0240 AEDT tomorrow).
And the president invited Obama and his family "to visit the White House soon, at their convenience", Perino said.
The US president also reached out to his defeated chosen heir, telling McCain "John, you gave it your all. I'm proud of you, and I'm sorry it didn't work out. You didn't leave anything on the playing field."
Bush also praised the Arizona senator's "fabulous and very classy" concession speech and sent his best to Cindy McCain, the candidate's wife, said Perino.
Vice-President Dick Cheney telephoned his successor-elect, Democratic Senator Joe Biden, to congratulate him, and planned to reach out to McCain's running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, said spokeswoman Lea Anne Foster.
Earlier, at a private dinner that doubled as First Lady Laura Bush's 62nd birthday party and the kickoff to an election-watching party, Bush had invoked God's blessing on whoever succeeds him, Perino said.
"The president gave a toast at the start of the dinner thanking those present for all the work they've done and for their friendship. He ended by saying, 'And may God bless whoever wins tonight'," she told reporters. Continued...
Well, there it is folks, a nice picture of Bu$h on the desk phone, and Dana Perino telling us what he said to Obama. The picture of Duhbya and the video of Duhhbya are both on the whitehouse.gov website, but his actual conversation is released in an email to reporters by the Whitehouse press secretary...G:?

Karl Rove involved in Senator Gordon Smith's campaign financing
Well folks, the infestation of Neoconservative vermin in the White House is alive and well, as can be seen by such front's as "Freedom's Watch" which is pumping money into Senator Smith's campaign. Meanwhile Smith is hanging on to
Obama's coat tails, trying to pose as a moderate conservative. Only Joe Lieberman can be compared to this two faced Senator that will say anything to hang onto his position and only Bu$hco would pour this amount of money and power into a senatorial campaign. The funny thing is that Obama is stumping for Jeff Merkley, while Karl Rove works with "Freedom's Watch", behind the scenes, to do photo-ops against Merkley.
Will Gordon Smith fire robocall firm FLS-Connect?
Blue Oregon
Kari Chisholm
As John McCain defends the robocalls tying Barack Obama to Bill Ayers, Gordon Smith is desperately trying to distance himself.
Today, his campaign told the Huffington Post that Smith is opposed to negative robocalls:
"They [the Ayers calls] are not taking place in Oregon and Senator Smith does not condone these sort of calls. Negative robocalls are not appropriate and have no place in campaigns."
But here's the thing. The company that is producing these attack robocalls for John McCain, FLS-Connect, has been paid nearly $100,000 by Gordon Smith over the last year.
Not only that, but Gordon Smith - right now, in Oregon - is the beneficiary of a series of negative robocalls being produced by Karl Rove and Freedom's Watch attacking Jeff Merkley.
I have two questions:
- Will Gordon Smith fire FLS-Connect?
- Will Gordon Smith call on Karl Rove to stop the negative robocalls in Oregon?
If Gordon Smith won't fire FLS-Connect and call on Karl Rove to stop robocalling Oregonians, then it's clear that this is just a cheap publicity stunt. Nothing more.

Where is the wizard now that we need him? Or, All is not Well in Oz
The American Dream is not always what it seems, as we plunge headlong into an inflationary spiral while wondering if we should take our remaining money out of the bank and if we're lucky enough to have a 401K plan, what we should do with it. Our congress OK's taking out a loan in the taxpayers name of $700,000,000,000 as if anyone can even understand how much money this is with no guarantee that it will fix the problem or even try to explain what the problem is, and from what I read in The web of Debt, probably never will.
HOW THE PLUNGE PROTECTION TEAM
KILLED THE FREE MARKET

“We’re now no different from any of those Western European semi-socialist welfare states that we love to deride. Italy? Sure, it’s had four governments since last Thursday, but none of them would have allowed this to go on; the Italians know how to rig an economy.”
– Bill Saporito, “How We Became the United States of France,” Time (September 21, 2008)
October 24 marks the 79th anniversary of the October 1929 stock market crash. Heavy selling started on Thursday, October 24, 1929, and accelerated the following week on Black Monday and Black Tuesday, October 28 and 29. Many feared a repeat of this disaster on Friday, October 24, 2008, after Japan’s Nikkei stock average fell nearly 10% during the night, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 8%, and Germany’s and Britain’s fell 5%.
“In a stunning turn of events,” reported Yahoo! Finance, “the futures for the major indices were ‘lock limit’ down before the start of trading Friday, meaning they had hit a 5% threshold that prevented them from trading any lower until the stock market opened Friday.” Traders prepared for the worst, but remarkably, disaster was averted. The U.S. market fell only 3.5%, just another “ordinary” bearish day.
Why the more modest drop in the U.S., where the financial debacle originated and should have hit hardest? Suspicious observers saw the covert hand of the Plunge Protection Team (PPT), the group set up under President Reagan to maintain market “stability” by manipulating markets behind the scenes.
