Earth Hour: Lights out at 8:30 PM March 28, 2009

Hmm, interesting concept* wonder if there is anyone out there who will notice. I will be participating, always the optimist when it comes to group think, and I hope that the participation is 100%. If our troubled old planet is being observed from other lifeforms in our galaxy an event like this might get their attention. Not only could the light fluxuation be seen, on an hourly basis, but a decrease in energy could be observed.

With a flick of the light switch, we the sheeple will have spoken and if this is successful at all we might consider greater sacrifices as we, "shudder" shut down our computers, telephones, radios, teevee's, and all the other amenities that we consider indespsensible. With any luck, maybe next year, we could have a "The Day The Earth Stood Still" moment...G:

YOUR LIGHT SWITCH IS YOUR VOTE

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.

VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.

It's a stunt, yeah. But anything that boosts awareness of workable solutions is a good thing. It takes a lot to motivate people to change their behavior. Sheer inertia plus the constant drumbeat of negativity, lies & denial from the corporatists take big stunts to overcome. It's common to hear ordinary people repeating nonsense they picked up from a talk radio show or a cable "news" show they had on in the background, as if by subliminal, post-hypnotic suggestion or something: "Global warming is just a theory," "Solar doesn't work," "Electric cars will never be affordable," etc, etc.

What galls me is that much of the current economic crisis was brought on by the speculation in the energy markets, often by bank-owned entities, which nobody talks about. Meanwhile, we're flooding some of those same banks with public money now. The amounts being bandied about are sufficient to put complete solar hot water systems in every home in America, which would dramatically reduce energy demand, provide thousands of jobs and guarantee the survival a yet another American-originated industry that is otherwise headed for China.

Yer freakin' tax dollars at work.

  2. Yo, you old greener, you!

Well, I really wish I could join you in the festivities, Olde Tymer, but, as you know, I'm agin' it all. Elitist bullshit, n' all that.

Anyway, I am ecological, and don't like pollution, so I can touch base with you there. I didn't do a damned thing, last night, except use maybe more power than I usually do.

Anyway, take care, and grow an extra row of weed just for me, this year, hear me?

    ;-)

  4. Well, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Had to go to a family gathering, and the last thing on their minds was turning the lights off. So there I was in glare of electric lights, eating spicy beef from a chinese restaurant, trying to explain that forming a prayer circle to defeat terrorism isn't necessarily a good thing. Oh well, I think that everything was off at home.

Sure wish I could get some seeds in the ground. We're still having frosty nights and rain almost every day. Grow lights anyone?

    .......zzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZ*
